If the thought of going to the dentist makes your teeth chatter in fear, laser dentistry can help you avoid the needles and the drills.

Laser dentistry isn't brand new, but it is starting to become more popular at local dentist offices. While it won't make the drills go away for everything, in many cases the laser can replace them.

"It doesn't generate any vibrations, heat or pressure, which are three main sources of dental pain when we are working with the drill," says Dr. James James with William Deyerle Family Dentistry.

It's powerful enough to cut through teeth, gum tissue, and bone. It works by using a combination of laser energy and water to do its cutting.

There's another benefit the patients seem to love. "It allows us to treat patients without having to give the shots and numb them," says Dr. James.

The one thing the laser can't be used on is metal fillings.
