Laser, then cosmetic?

Q:I am considering cosmetic eye surgery and also laser surgery to eliminate eye glasses. Do you recommend the laser before the cosmetic?

A: I believe it's a matter of choice. If you decide to have laser surgery first, you might have some trauma looking at yourself, as you will see your eyes in ways you have not before. I have many patients who call for an emergency consultation after they have had corrective vision surgery (CVS) and must have their eyes fixed right away. Certain steps should be taken before jumping into cosmetic eye surgery (CES) right after having CVS. Depending on what type of CVS you have, a period between six months and one year should be taken before you have CES. This allows your eyes to acclimate to the surgery. Once you and your ophthalmologist feel that your vision is stable you can have cosmetic surgery.

If, however, your state of mental health is more important, having your CES first will help. If my patient elects to have CES first I usually will release them to have their CVS after three months and only after the patient's eyes feel as comfortable as before their surgery. Naturally, the decision to have the CVS will be dependent on the ophthalmologist. Either way it is imperative that the patient inform his or her surgeon about the prior surgery. As always, good communication between you and your doctor is important to optimize those baby blues, browns or whatever.
