Treatment Options for Cellulite and Fat Reduction

Over 80% of the adult female population suffers from the appearance of cellulite in the skin. This dimpled, bumpy or pillowed appearance of the skin is due to an irregularity in the distribution of fat in the area and is commonly found on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen. Cellulite appears early in life and tends to increase through the years.

The development of cellulite has little to do with lifestyle, including diet and exercise, though women will notice that cellulite appears more prominent when they gain weight. There is also a genetic predisposition for its development. In addition to cellulite, many women find they have trouble losing weight from localized areas of the hips, lower abdomen, love handles and bra strap area. The advances in treatment modalities today enable us to smooth the skin and remove inches from the bodyĚs contour.

What causes cellulite?

As skin ages, collagen and connective tissue lose their elasticity and the skinĚs dermis is weakened. The aging process also affects the metabolic, endocrine and vascular systems, which may result in an inability to efficiently discharge waste products. Lymph drainage and microcirculation are particularly affected. The resulting accumulation of waste products causes alterations in connective tissue and the fat cells which are held in a framework of collagen. Fat cells enlarge, impact blood vessels and cause edema or swelling. The fat cells are displaced upwards into the lower dermis and the fibrous bands that normally maintain skin tension become less elastic and trap the displaced cells. The cottage cheese appearance is caused by the restriction of fibrous strands as they pull down the skin at their attachment points.

As we age, fat storage becomes a problem and fat cells swell and become larger. The bodyĚs natural lymphatic drainage system becomes compromised so waste products are not cleared as efficiently. Critical factors such as declining function of the microcirculation caused by falling estrogen levels also play a role.

The storage and release of the fat from fat cells in areas of cellulite and unwanted fat stores is in part controlled by estrogen receptors on the cell membrane. These deposits also represent an evolutionary development to ensure adequate resources to nurture and support pregnancy. This explains the resistance to simple treatment measures like dietary modification or exercise alone.

What are the stages of Cellulite?

Stage 0: no visible cellulite

Stage 1: no visible cellulite unless the skin is pinched

Stage 2: Visible cellulite is noted when standing, but not when lying down.

Stage 3: Visible cellulite when standing or lying down.

Treatment Options:

Sadly, diet and exercise alone rarely clears the cellulite and whereas liposuction helps to reduce localized fat, it is not effective for cellulite. Numerous thigh creams, massages, vibrators, botanical wraps have been tried in the United States, all with virtually no long term results. It is only over the last few years that we have begun to effectively treat cellulite.

Reflections is unique in that it offers three different options for the treatment of cellulite and unwanted fat. These include traditional Mesotherapy, DermaWave No Needle Mesotherapy and the FDA approved VelaSmooth system.

Mesotherapy, developed in France over 50 years ago, involves the injection of very small amounts of naturally occurring substances, minerals and pharmaceutical agents into the top layers of the skin. DermaWave uses a process called Aquaphoresis whereby electrical energy is used to combat the factors that lead to cellulite and to drive topical Mesotherapy solutions through the skin. VelaSmooth is a procedure that utilizes infrared energy and radiofrequency energy in combination with a mechanical roller and suction device to treat cellulite. These three treatments can improve the texture of the skin as well as help you to lose inches from the problem area.

During an initial consultation with the physician, they will evaluate your skin, determine your stage of cellulite and discuss all treatment options. The three alternatives for treatment mentioned above can be performed individually, sequentially or in combination. It is the synergism between these treatment regimens when they are performed together that is producing the most exciting results that we have ever seen for the treatment of cellulite and localized fat.
