More than diet and exercise: some folks resolve to revamp

Byram - The new year is here, and that means resolutions. Weight loss goals are ambitious, but often abandoned after a few weeks or months. Fashion and beauty experts have more ÏdoableÓ alternative to the ÏtraditionalÏ New Years resolution. Instead of spending hundreds on a gym membership (and many people donÌt use those after a month or two) some folks consider revamping their wardrobe or even revitalizing their appearance.

You laugh. You frown. You concentrate. And, over time, those expressions leave their mark upon your face. Lately, itÌs gotten easier, and less expensive to do something about it, and these cosmetic treatments arenÌt just for women.

ÏI saw the ads again and again,Ó said Martin Roberts of Byram. When January rolled around, he decided to do something about it and got a Botox treatment near where he works in Manhattan during his lunch hour. ÏIt was a great beginning of the year resolution, it took about 15 minutes and the wrinkles on my forehead vanished almost completely within a few days.Ó

Botox is administered by a doctor÷usually a plastic surgeon÷.and starts at a couple of hundred dollars. Once something only available in the city, itÌs now popping up all over including in our area. ÏThe cost depends on how much a person needs,Ó said Dr. Mokhtar Asaadi.

A plastic surgeon, Asaadi, performs procedures in Andover. Keeping up with the wave of the future, Laura Rinaolo, who owns Bella Boutique Salon, asked Asaadi if heÌd come to her salon to do Botox and Restylane injections for her clients. It was an instant hit, and now the doctor, who has offices in Manhattan and Short Hills, makes a monthly trip to Bella Boutique. Besidse Botox and Restylane, Asaadi performs laser treatments to remove hair, sun spots and other marks. ÏThese are all great methods of self-improvement,Ó Rinaolo said. For several hundred dollars, years disappear for far less than getting a face lift/plastic surgery. She added, ÏThink about how much money people spend on Îtopicals.Ì Add that all up and the cost isnÌt bad at all.Ó

Rinaolo isnÌt alone in wanting to bring these state-of-the-art, self-improvement treatments to the area. In Newton, Martin Blackwell, DO, performs Botox injections, chemical peels and microdermabrasion at his offices.

Just over the boarder, in Milford, PA, Doctors Richard and Marina Buckley have a large practice called Advanced Skin Cosmetic Laser Center Dermatology. Their Center offers Botox, Collagen, Hylaform, Restylane, Radiesse, and fat transfer in addition to laser skin treatments and microdermabrasion.

By and large, Dr. Richard Buckley said, ÏPeople say they look 10 years younger after the treatments.Ó A plastic surgeon, Buckley said ÏItÌs really an artwork,Ó and heÌs learned how to keep the look natural yet add a whole new sense of youth and vibrancy to peoplesÌ faces. Buckley has people travel to him from as far away as Washington, DC, but the majority of his patients are from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He said he either does a consultation then people come back or he can do treatments right on the spot. ÏThese procedures arenÌt horribly expensive and are a great resolution for the beginning of the year. They can also really boost self confidence and make people feel good about themselves.Ó

Aside from these cosmetic procedures, there are some straight-from-California beauty processes now available in our area. Located on Trinity Street, in Newton, Salon Di Panache is touted as ÏManhattan luxury in a small townÓ by reviewers on www.yahoo.com. Owner Pati Heal recently brought a new revolution in beauty to the salon in eye lash extensions. ÏWe actually individually extend each lash,Ó Heal said, ÏAnd it lasts for about six weeks.Ó Lashes naturally fall out over time and so do the glued on extensions, but Heal said the extensions can Ïreally make your eyes pop nicely.Ó Located in a restored Victorian home, Salon Di Panache brings chi chi glamour to Sussex County with complimentary hand massage while you wait for hair treatments. They offer snacks, coffee or even a glass of wine Ïwhen youÌre stressed.Ó The extensions start at $50 for a partial pop on the sides and go up depending on how much someone wants done. They are applied in a relaxing environment and the process is painless.

Another way to spice up your winter is by revamping your wardrobe. Whether you want to add some new pieces or pare down what already exists, the key to Ïhoning your look,Ó experts say, is to take your time. There are a host of ÏhiddenÓ stores and boutiques around Sussex County that are home to all kinds of treasures.

From boutiques to Botox, there are alternative winter resolutions to the traditional ones, and shedding years from your face or adding style to your wardrobe can keep the motivation to hit the treadmill going a lot stronger.
